For this weeks meeting I was the Vocabulary Enricher. Some words that I did not understand were Shrugged, Kaddish, Murmuring and wriggling.

Shrugged is when you raise your shoulders or express a doubt.

Kaddish is an ancient Jewish prayer.

Murmuring means when someone makes a continuous sound.

Wriggling is a twist and a turn within a quick writhing movement.

I had four important paragraphs that i chose to discus in my group. The first on is on page 131 paragraph 4.

"At home Mrs. Bell was slicing bread and kosher cheese for supper. Molly didn't look at her, because she wouldn't speak to Mrs. Bell since Mrs. Bell had whipped Molly for losing Rachel and for running off and getting lost herself. She hadn't really whipped her but she'd pulled Molly out of the kitchen into the backyard while Mr. Bell and David averted their eyes politely. She'd grabbed a dry , rotten stick off the kindling pile and flailed at Molly, who turned and twisted in her grip and managed to avoid getting hit more than once or twice before the stick finally fell into pieces."

I chose this paragraph because it shows that being a slave for the Bells is not all sunshine and rainbows because Molly was living a good life for a slave. the next paragraph that i chose is on page 151 paragraph 6

"Molly shrugged. What the letter said about her wasn't very nice, but she'd been called worse thinks. "Mr. Mendez paid for me when i was in N--- before i came here," She said fairly. "He paid for my food and my---" She looked at David and decided not to say 'chains' or 'cell' Of course David and decided and everyone else knew she'd been in Newgate, but she didn't fell like talking about it when they were all looking at her. "My keep."

I chose this because we finally learn why Mr. Mandez paid for molly's up keep. The next paragraph i chose was on page 153 paragraph 6


"Christy was alive but only just. Her skin was covered with welts crisscrossed on top of welts and blood running out of the gashes on top. Molly had see people whipped in London, of course but not on their faces like this."

I chose this paragraph because it helped introduced a new character who was abused by their master and i believe that since the Bells are helping the slave it will lead into more conflict between the Bells and the Slaves owner.

Those are the three paragraphs that i chose to share as literary luminary this week.

Travel Tracer:
The story started in the Place of Execution (or Old Bailey). Then it took place in the Newgate Prison, a hold and a cell. Then it took place in the Pool of London where they boarded the ship Good Intention and set sail across the Atlantic. After being on the ocean they reached New York. They anchored the boat in the New York Dock. Moly,the main character, then goes to the Bell's house as a slave. Since the family is Jewish they go to the synagogue. Rachel needs to use the bathroom so Moly takes her home and then to the market.

New gate Prison Hold- It smelled of unwashed bodies and clothes, of rotting straw and waste, of bad liquor, of bad teeth , of the seeping miasma of jail fever and of death. The Hold was an underground dungeon for prisoners who had no money to pay for a proper cell.The floor was covered with dead insects instead of straw.
Synagogue- A brand new brick building on Mill Street. Has a women's gallery that wraps around 3 sides of the building. It was like a raised balcony. There were benches against the wall and a railing made of latticework. There is an ark that contains the Torah Scrolls.

Connection 1: 

When the girls were boarding a ship, it said that they were getting pushed around and getting shoved. the same thing happened to me when i went to Venice and i was boarding a boat that would escort people through the city of water.

Connection 2:

When one of the girls was working on a farm or something, i have done the same thing helping my grandparents and parents on their gardens and back yards working to keep their plants healthy.

Molly is only ten year old girl, that can pick a pocket in no time flat. Molly was banished to America (New York). Before New York she lived in London. When she moved her life changed a lot. In New York Jewish family bayed Molly. As time passes Molly learned Jewish religion, but she didn't like it. She doesn't like New York, she wants to go back to London.

My job this week is Summerizer. There is a lot going on in the book. This book starts out with the junior pickpokecter molly being trailed and sentenced to go to america to be sold as a slave for seven years. She has to go on a 'boat and travel two months to reach America. there she is told she needs to be 21 before she can be released from her slavery. She.She is sold as a slave to a man named M.r Bell. He takes her home to his house and tells his wife to give her a bath and give her new cloths. Molly refuses and she wants to keep everything. the story starts to pick up when molly and the Bells go to the synagogal for Saturday Sabbath. Rachel the Bells daughter want to go home to use the bathroom. Molly takes her home and then she wanted to see her sweetheart man down at the docks. When Molly refuses she runs away. Molly looks for her but she stumbles into David the bell's son who was looking for them. Then they go and look for Rachel. Molly takes this opportunity to talk to ship captains to look for a way back to London. The chapter ends with Molly telling David that she wants to get back to London.

Answers to the questions my group has discussed:

1. Because she did not like them and she wanted to be free and go to London. 
2. She was talking to a captain and Rachel just ran away. 
3. Because everybody was panicking, 
4. We think that they will find Rachel. 
5. ''They thought that it was a good day to blow up the steam.'' Meaning that they were really mad.  
6. My group member thought that he liked her and that he did not want any harm so he was not so surprised.

1. Question: What do you think about Eliza helping Matilda at the sick/homeless shelter?
Answer: We thought it was very nice considering that Matilda is brave and kind enough to help people in need. i think the both of them are really nice people.

2. Question: What do you think about the ending of the book?
Answer: We thought it had a great ending, although it was sad, we believed it was amazing.

3. Question: How did you expect the book to end?
Answer: We all thought similar thoughts... we thought that the grandfather was going to die as well as the mother.

4. Question: Who is your favorite character and why?
Answer: We all like the grandfather a lot. we thought that even though he was old he was a very kind and warm hearted man that was mostly happy.

5. Question: What are your overall thoughts about the book?
Answer: We thought that the book was exciting, sad, happy, and exciting. We all HATED the mother and kinda wished she was going to be the one to die. we also thought it was really sad when the grandfather died. we also liked that in the end they divided to open up the coffee shop again.
overall, it was an amazing reading experience.

Connector:
1. "Are we going to die, Eliza?" I asked finally.
Eliza snorted.
"That's foolish talk. I'm not going to die. I have too much work to do. Mother Smith there, she won't go until she's ready and the Lord himself asks for the pleasure of her company. Don't listen to words of despair, Mattie. You must be strong and have faith."

This passage reminds me of Ms. Brink at the volleyball tournament when she kept telling us not to get down because we were losing and that we could win.

2. I applied all my force to clean the burnt bits from the bottom of the stew pot. Mother Smith hadn't said a word when the stew burned because I forgot to stir it. She didn't had to say a word; the way she lifted her chin as she turned away said everything. I was a complete failure.

This passage reminds me of the time Jihyun and I tried to make waffles but burned them and my mother laughed at us. We then had to take the waffles of and clean the waffle maker with knifes.

3. I looked around the garden. No insects hovered over the dying plants or the well. The entire yard sparkled with diamonds of frost that quickly melted into millions of drops of water with a gentle kiss of the sun.
Frost.
This was no dream.
"Eliza!! Eliza!! 
Eliza stumbled out onto the porch , alarmed and confused.

The weather before this passage was hot and they couldn't cool the house down no matter what Mattie and Eliza tried to do. 

This passage reminds me of last years weather. It was short sleeve weather one day and the next it was snowing.

I chose this because it is a very poetic and powerful sentence. I feel like Mattie is very wise and she understands death and that she is all alone. It is very interesting and very true that death is a heavy companion, and I find it very impressive that Mattie is able to understand and phrase this. It only makes me love her character so much more.

"In the beginning of August, this was the largest city in the United States. Forty thousand people lived here"

I chose this because it is very interesting how population and size was so different back then. Today there are cities where ten of millions of people live, and in Philadelphia, which was the largest city in the United States only held four thousand people.

"'Mama's broken too' she said"

I chose this because it is very impressive that a small child can make a connection like this. Mattie finds a broken doll on the ground and gives to a little girl, but the girl says that it is broken. Mattie says that maybe her parents can fix the doll but the girl responds that 'Mama's broken too.'

My job connector

This week I was a connector. We finished our first book this meeting. there are a lot of connection in this book to real life. Some connection to real life is that the yellow fever actually happened. This is because the books we are reading are historical fiction books. A lot of the major events actually happened in real life. Another event that was devastating like the yellow fever is the black plague.  It was the plague that terrorized Europe and killed 1/3 of it's population. it is similar because it was an epidemic that killed a lot of people and drove many people out of their homes. That is what yellow fever did but on a much smaller scale. A personal connection that i made is about my cousin. She is staying at my grandma's because her mother my aunt is sick with a fever. It is like when Matilda goes to a different city with her grandpa to escape the yellow fever. A connection that Lan made is that in ex Yugoslavia there was an outbreak of small pox and the government closed everything down and quarantined the sick like what they did in the book. Those are the connection that I made this week

A man named Barney was trying to figure out whether Matilda is dead or alive. Matilda fad feverish dreams and dreamed that she has yellow fever and is in a hospital. When Matilda woke up Mrs. Flagg tells her that her grandfather has recovered so her grandfather visited her. Once he visited her he went on and flirted with Mrs, Flagg. Matilda realized that she is at a Brush Hill, a mansion that was turned into a hospital for people with Yellow Fever. Matilda heard stories about the fever in Philadelphia and thought about her friends and family. Matilda was informed by a Clerk that they cannot inform her Mother so her grandfather volunteered to be her guardian. Once Matilda and her grandfather said goodbye to the hospital and came back to the coffeehouse, the coffeehouse was robbed. Matilda ran up to her room and everything was in place. Matilda checked the cashier register and all the money was there. Matilda took a bath and dressed in her Mothers clothes because she didn't have her nice clean clothes. Later on Mattie decided to sleep downstairs and opened her grandfathers Bible. Once she went to sleep she went   to sleep she heard the burgles planning their plan. Once they broke in they took grandfathers sword and realized that there is someone in the coffeehouse. Grandfather attacked  them and Mattie threatens them.After grandfathers attack he was injured and died.  Mattie realized that she had to bury him and after the burial she wondered where to go so she went to the hat shop. A girl tells Mattie that her Mother is broken. Matilda went to Fifth Street and she thought she saw Eliza and she did! Eliza and Mattie were reunited. After they reunited Eliza took Matilda to her brother Joseph. Matilda got to meet Josephs Mother Mrs. Smith. When everyone fell asleep Matilda told Eliza the whole story. Matilda and Eliza took Nell to the orphan house. After Matilda and Eliza took Nell to the orphan house Eliza told Matilda gossip about the Ogilive. Matilda helped Eliza care for some people with the fever.Matilda and Eliza spend their rest of the fay taking care of the Sharp family. The next day the two started working as nurses so Eliza suggested to find a doctor to bleed the children but Matilda was against that. When Matilda went outside to get more water she fell asleep in the garden. Later, a messenger from Joseph arrived with more food Mrs. Epler told Matilda that her Mother is missing and that she will ask for her. Nathaniel became a constant visitor at the coffeehouse. Nathaniel and Matilda went for a walk and visited her grandfathers grave in the meantime Eliza suggested a thanksgiving feast. Joseph was wondering if Matilda was selling the coffeehouse. The coffeehouse opens and business in booming and Mattie became pensive. all of a sudden Nathaniel burst through the door and said that President Washington is coming down High Street and Matilda gives him a big kiss. Mattie saw her Mother in country clothes, Matilda and her Mother were . Maildas Mother asked about what happened to grandfather and she told him everything. Mother asked her to help upstairs to rest.

This week I drew a picture of Matilda in her bed sick from yellow fever with the windows and shutters of her room open. I drew this picture because it signifies that Matilda was a victim of Yellow Fever at the beginning of the book, Matilda is a victim of the Yellow Fever because  is contagious to the whole city. Matilda also helps other victims of yellow fever by going to their homes and try to do the best she can.

My grandfather told me that in Belgrade, Srbija and Kosovo there was an out break of small pox. In the book "The Fever"  there is an out  break of yellow fever. My connection takes place in 1972 in Kosovo and in Belgrade. That an out break of smallpox happens.The government acted fast and had shutdowns and the people that they tough had been infected where placed in to the schools that where shutdown.They all got vaccinated again to make sure that they don't get smallpox.

Summary:
       Mattie and Grandfather are thrown off the carriage because Grandfather is sick, though Mattie is sure that he doesn't have the yellow fever. Grandfather is slipping in and out of unconsciousness and Mattie has to find food and water for both of them. One day she goes to find a farm where she can get a meal, when she collapses. The next time she wakes up she is in  a hospital, and is told that she has the yellow fever but she is getting better. When she has recovered fully, she and grandfather go back to the city. There they see that the coffeehouse has been robbed and everything is a mess. The same night two robbers come to the house, scouring for food. Grandfather saves Mattie's life, but he dies n the process. Now Mattie is all alone and she doesn't know what to do.
