My job this week is Summerizer. There is a lot going on in the book. This book starts out with the junior pickpokecter molly being trailed and sentenced to go to america to be sold as a slave for seven years. She has to go on a 'boat and travel two months to reach America. there she is told she needs to be 21 before she can be released from her slavery. She.She is sold as a slave to a man named M.r Bell. He takes her home to his house and tells his wife to give her a bath and give her new cloths. Molly refuses and she wants to keep everything. the story starts to pick up when molly and the Bells go to the synagogal for Saturday Sabbath. Rachel the Bells daughter want to go home to use the bathroom. Molly takes her home and then she wanted to see her sweetheart man down at the docks. When Molly refuses she runs away. Molly looks for her but she stumbles into David the bell's son who was looking for them. Then they go and look for Rachel. Molly takes this opportunity to talk to ship captains to look for a way back to London. The chapter ends with Molly telling David that she wants to get back to London.

For this weeks meeting I was the Discussion Director. I came up with 4 questions that were:

6. How did you feel when David went to look for Molly?

   

Answers to the questions my group has discussed:

1. Because she did not like them and she wanted to be free and go to London. 
2. She was talking to a captain and Rachel just ran away. 
3. Because everybody was panicking, 
4. We think that they will find Rachel. 
5. ''They thought that it was a good day to blow up the steam.'' Meaning that they were really mad.  
6. My group member thought that he liked her and that he did not want any harm so he was not so surprised.

1. Question: What do you think about Eliza helping Matilda at the sick/homeless shelter?
Answer: We thought it was very nice considering that Matilda is brave and kind enough to help people in need. i think the both of them are really nice people.

2. Question: What do you think about the ending of the book?
Answer: We thought it had a great ending, although it was sad, we believed it was amazing.

3. Question: How did you expect the book to end?
Answer: We all thought similar thoughts... we thought that the grandfather was going to die as well as the mother.

4. Question: Who is your favorite character and why?
Answer: We all like the grandfather a lot. we thought that even though he was old he was a very kind and warm hearted man that was mostly happy.

5. Question: What are your overall thoughts about the book?
Answer: We thought that the book was exciting, sad, happy, and exciting. We all HATED the mother and kinda wished she was going to be the one to die. we also thought it was really sad when the grandfather died. we also liked that in the end they divided to open up the coffee shop again.
overall, it was an amazing reading experience.

Connector:
1. "Are we going to die, Eliza?" I asked finally.
Eliza snorted.
"That's foolish talk. I'm not going to die. I have too much work to do. Mother Smith there, she won't go until she's ready and the Lord himself asks for the pleasure of her company. Don't listen to words of despair, Mattie. You must be strong and have faith."

This passage reminds me of Ms. Brink at the volleyball tournament when she kept telling us not to get down because we were losing and that we could win.

2. I applied all my force to clean the burnt bits from the bottom of the stew pot. Mother Smith hadn't said a word when the stew burned because I forgot to stir it. She didn't had to say a word; the way she lifted her chin as she turned away said everything. I was a complete failure.

This passage reminds me of the time Jihyun and I tried to make waffles but burned them and my mother laughed at us. We then had to take the waffles of and clean the waffle maker with knifes.

3. I looked around the garden. No insects hovered over the dying plants or the well. The entire yard sparkled with diamonds of frost that quickly melted into millions of drops of water with a gentle kiss of the sun.
Frost.
This was no dream.
"Eliza!! Eliza!! 
Eliza stumbled out onto the porch , alarmed and confused.

The weather before this passage was hot and they couldn't cool the house down no matter what Mattie and Eliza tried to do. 

This passage reminds me of last years weather. It was short sleeve weather one day and the next it was snowing.

Paragraph #1:
"I understood why the cart man was walking so slowly. Death was a heavy companion."

I chose this because it is a very poetic and powerful sentence. I feel like Mattie is very wise and she understands death and that she is all alone. It is very interesting and very true that death is a heavy companion, and I find it very impressive that Mattie is able to understand and phrase this. It only makes me love her character so much more.

"In the beginning of August, this was the largest city in the United States. Forty thousand people lived here"

I chose this because it is very interesting how population and size was so different back then. Today there are cities where ten of millions of people live, and in Philadelphia, which was the largest city in the United States only held four thousand people.

"'Mama's broken too' she said"

I chose this because it is very impressive that a small child can make a connection like this. Mattie finds a broken doll on the ground and gives to a little girl, but the girl says that it is broken. Mattie says that maybe her parents can fix the doll but the girl responds that 'Mama's broken too.'

My job connector

This week I was a connector. We finished our first book this meeting. there are a lot of connection in this book to real life. Some connection to real life is that the yellow fever actually happened. This is because the books we are reading are historical fiction books. A lot of the major events actually happened in real life. Another event that was devastating like the yellow fever is the black plague.  It was the plague that terrorized Europe and killed 1/3 of it's population. it is similar because it was an epidemic that killed a lot of people and drove many people out of their homes. That is what yellow fever did but on a much smaller scale. A personal connection that i made is about my cousin. She is staying at my grandma's because her mother my aunt is sick with a fever. It is like when Matilda goes to a different city with her grandpa to escape the yellow fever. A connection that Lan made is that in ex Yugoslavia there was an outbreak of small pox and the government closed everything down and quarantined the sick like what they did in the book. Those are the connection that I made this week
